Welcome to the tutorial on how to participate in CARE. To get started, you will need a machine with a GPU. Since we want to treat everyone equally and allow users with no technical background to participate in CARE with ease, we have developed a website where users can one-click-deploy a GPU-capable machine and start to CARE. Alternatively, if you wish to use your own machine, please check out our Self-Host section.
To get started, you will need a vast.ai account, head over to vast.ai, and click on SIGN IN.
Then, click on Create Account and follow the instructions. NOTE: Remember to verify your email address after signing up.
After you've created your account successfully, head over to the billing console and click ADD CREDIT. Note: If its not responsive, perform a hard refresh (Ctrl + Shift + R
on Windows, ⌘ + Shift + R
on Mac)
To add credit with cryptocurrency, you can pick Coinbase. Enter the amount you wish to top up then hit PAY WITH COINBASE. Note: We suggest to top up a small amount the first time.
Select a Cryptocurrency to pay with then follow the instructions. After you've paid, wait for the credit to appear in your account, this usually is not instant.
If your top up is successful, you should be able to see your balance here:
Now that you have credit in your account, head over to the account console and copy your API key, you will need this later. Note: You can always reset your API key to revoke access when needed.
Now that you have a vast.ai account, head over to our CARE website. Once you are in, you will be greeted with a welcome screen, click on Launch to continue.
Then connect your wallet and enter your Vast.ai API KEY then click SAVE. Note:
Use the wallet which contains $sols, holders will receive bonus rewards. Refer to this page on how the bonus are calculated.
We do not store your API KEY, so you will need to enter it every time you operate on our site.
After you have connected everything, head over to the search section and apply filters to search for a machine with the specs you wish to rent.
The filters consists of:
GPU Name
Number of GPUs on a machine
Number of effective CPU cores on a machine (some machine share cores between renters, thus "effective")
Minimum Reliability: How reliable the machine is, the higher the better, maximum reliability = 1
Minimum duration: How long you can rent the machine for (rented machines can always be terminated)
Note: If there are no machines that meet your requirements, by default, we will display the baseline options
If you are unsure on what each of the specs mean, hover your mouse over it and a short description should pop up.
Once you have decided on which machine to rent, click RENT and if your request was accepted, the site will show a "success" notification.
If you get a 429 error when you try to rent a machine, you probably did not verify your email address, double check the email you registered on vast.ai.
Now, head over to My Instances, and you should be able to see the machine you rented. Here, there are several important controls:
Destroy: Terminate a machine
Reboot: Restart a machine
Dashboard: Website showing your Folding status and contributions, see below
View Logs: Show the latest logs of your machine, see below
NOTE: To avoid any errors, allow a few minutes for the machine to initialize before operating
When entering your dashboard, you will be prompted with a password:
username: care
password: your vast.ai api key
If your machine is stuck on "Machine State: created" with a disabled DASHBOARD button, destroy it and rent another one.
Since every machine has different specs, we cannot guarantee that every single one of them will work flawlessly and maintain at a high workload. A correct running instance should look something like below. If after an hour you do not see any Completed or steps in your log. We suggest you to destroy your instance and rent another one. If you are unable to get it to work after a few tries, open a ticket in discord.
After your machine has been initialized successfully, you should be able to click on DASHBOARD to view your folding status. Here, you will be able to view your wallet address, the team you are in and the points you have earned.
Make sure your team is 1065248
and your team is "Solinscription CAREs".
On a fresh machine, the first time you visit to your dashboard, you will most likely see a GREEN CPU status and RED or YELLOW GPU status, this is perfectly normal, since GPU tasks requires a bit more time to start.
Another cool little feature is that you can also pick research you want to support in
After around 15-30 minutes, you should see your GPU status turn GREEN. Congratulations, you have started folding and is participating in CARE . Refer to this section on how the reward system is designed.
